Advice for New Students

Time Management Advice

One of the biggest struggles in school that I had to overcome was finding the time to set up a schedule to where I can get all of my assignments in while maintaining the rest of my life. The best schedule that I found that works for me was to get one post in for my discussions by Tuesday, get my live lectures done by Thursday and everything else done by Saturday or Sunday. Of course, this doesn’t always work out with my ever changing work schedule, but modifications to a school schedule can always be made. In the end, you have to keep on top of what you need to do for school and make sure that all of your work gets turned in on time. Use a planner or a calendar. Use a phone alarm set up for school.

Classroom Navigation Advice

Classroom navigation is easy. The only thing that you really have to remember is that virtually anything can be found by returning to the home tab. From there, you can find the library or anything else that you are looking for. The home screen is great for returning to what you need to do and finding other stuff that needs to be done, like class work.

Grade Advice

Even when you stay on top of your schedule there are times when you fall behind or need to get extra points to maintain your goals. If you need extra points aside from the daily checkpoints, you can always ask your professor if you can redo assignments to try to pull in extra points to boost your grade. The best thing that you can do to maintain a good grade is to read everything before you do it. Read it twice if you have to.

Relationship Advice

One of the best things that you can do in school is make friends. Your classmates will become your network in school and possibly in life. The best way to make friends… talk. Bounce thoughts off of each other in your posts. Make study groups. It is worth it. You can also join clubs to meet new people.

My Inspiration

Mark Wheeler has inspired me for a while now. He is very driven in his work and very creative. Working for Microsoft is every designer’s dream, but being the Art Director is something that most could not even fathom. I really admire his tenacity and flare for creativity. Unfortunately, finding information about him and his work was hard enough to find and only came up with his digital portfolio and LinkedIn profile.

Background

Wheeler grew up in England and has a pretty solid career with advertising companies there and has done projects for some pretty big names such as Puma and Playstation. Wheeler has also collaborated with the Microsoft XBox team on several projects. Wheeler is currently working on Mixed Reality apps including Dynamics 365 Remote Assistant. (Wheeler, 2017)

How he inspires me

What inspires me most about his work is that it always pushes the boundaries and strives for the next level. You never know what could come next from his work or his team. His portfolio alone is worth a million words. His work is part of the reason that I strive to become a video game graphics designer. I know that it might be confusing to some, but in the end, art is art and great art inspires others no matter what medium you choose to create with.

My Journey Into Web Design

My journey into Web Design started when I was rather young and had started taking an interest in computers and technology of all forms. I chose web design since I could build a fundamental understanding of the design process and would help me to get a basic understanding of coding. This will ultimately lead into my desired career goal of becoming a video game graphic designer. I believe that learning the fundamentals and having a good solid design foundation is important for this to take place. What led me to choose Independence University for my school was the fact that each design class builds onto each other. There is a structured line up and a clear process for how each class leads into the next. I also like that each class has a clear purpose and clear place in the lineup of lessons.
